Project Features

The Preferred Design Alternative for the Harvie Road / Big Bay Point Road crossing includes:

  • Harvie Road / Big Bay Point Road crossing over Highway 400
  • Removal of the existing railway crossing on Big Bay Point Road between Bayview Drive and Fairview Drive
  • Buffered bike lanes and sidewalks on both sides
  • Five (5) lanes in the interim and ultimate seven (7) lanes between Bryne Drive and Bayview Drive
  • Protection of land for a potential future Highway interchange

During the design phase of the project, one of the objectives will be to identify opportunities to accelerate the project schedule, where possible, to advance the start of construction. In the meantime, the accelerated schedule set out in the 5 year capital plan is as follows:

2017Property Acquisition
2019/2020Construction to begin

The 30-day Notice of Completion for the Harvie / Big Bay / Hwy 400 Class EA was advertised on October 16th and 17th 2015 in the Barrie Examiner. All associated reports can be reviewed via Completed Environmental Assessments.

As identified in the Multi-Modal Active Transportation Master Plan (MMATMP), transportation improvements are needed on the following roads to minimize traffic issues in other areas and to maximize the use of the new highway crossing, thereby reducing traffic congestions on Essa and Mapleview:

  • Big Bay Point Road, Bayview Dr. to Huronia Rd.
  • Harvie Road, Veterans Dr. to Bryne Dr.
  • Harvie Road, Essa Rd. to Veterans Dr.
  • Bryne Drive, from north of Caplan Ave. to south of Essa Rd.
  • Bayview Drive, Big Bay Point Rd. to Little Ave.
